After graduating from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in May 2025 with a BFA in Scenic Technology, I transitioned from theatrical production into the construction industry, bringing with me a background in technical design, fabrication, drafting, and hands-on problem solving.
My first post-grad role was as an Assistant Project Manager at Candela Controls, where I gained experience coordinating complex projects, working with installers and technical teams, drafting, estimating, managing budgets, and helping projects move from planning through execution. This role introduced me to many of the project management skills I wanted to continue developing while giving me the opportunity to work in a completely different industry from my theatrical background.
In May 2026, I joined Turner Construction as a Field Engineer through Turner’s rotational program. The program has given me the opportunity to experience several different areas of construction and better understand how the different pieces of a project come together.
My rotations have included:
Self-Perform Operations (SPO) — I worked alongside self-perform teams, primarily focusing on concrete while also gaining experience with drywall, interiors, and general requirements scopes. This rotation gave me a closer look at the field operations and craftsmanship that go into bringing a project to life.
Procurement — I participated in the procurement process, including Trade Partner prequalification, post-bid reviews, and contract issuance. This gave me a better understanding of the relationships and processes that help set a project up for success before work begins.
Environmental Health & Safety — I gained field experience with safety operations and practices while working on the Orange County Convention Center Grand Concourse Expansion project. This rotation reinforced how important safety is to every aspect of construction and gave me the opportunity to see those practices applied in the field.
I am now continuing my career with Turner’s Preconstruction team as an Estimating Assistant, where I am developing my understanding of estimating, preconstruction processes, and project planning. I’m excited to build on everything I learned through my rotations and continue developing a career in construction management.
